Exclusive: BetMGM to Launch Online Poker in Michigan Later This Month

Roar Digital, the US online gaming and online sports betting company representing the interests of MGM Resorts International and partypoker parent company Entain, has announced that it will be launching online poker in the state of Michigan this month.

Under the BetMGM brand, the company launched online casino games and online sports betting in Michigan on January 22 of this year. Its license to offer online gaming in the state also includes online poker.

Roar will use the BetMGM Poker brand for online poker in Michigan. The company manages several online poker brands in New Jersey including partypoker NJ, Borgata Poker, and BetMGM Poker. All of its brands in New Jersey pool their liquidity together on the partypoker US Network.

BetMGM is already live with a regulated online casino and sports betting in Michigan. Existing players verified at BetMGM Casino or BetMGM Sports will be ready to go to play on BetMGM Poker MI when it launches in the coming weeks.

Online Poker in Michigan Growing Fast

PokerStars MI became the first online poker room to launch in Michigan on January 29, 2021, just one week after the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) authorized the grand opening of online casinos and online sportsbooks.

To say that online poker has proven popular in Michigan would be an understatement.

According to the latest cash game traffic data, seen exclusively by pokerfuse, PokerStars.MI is already the largest regulated real money online poker room in the US. Traffic at the newly launch site also exceeds the only interstate online poker network in the US, which includes WSOP NJ, WSOP NV, 888poker NJ and the three racinos in Delaware.

PokerStars MI has even managed to exceed the traffic of its sister site in Pennsylvania, PokerStars PA, despite the fact that the Keystone State has a population of nearly 3 million more than that of Michigan.

In fact, the traffic levels seen in Michigan so far represent the highest traffic levels observed at an online poker room in any US regulated market ever.

Figures tracked by GameIntel, and licensed exclusively by pokerfuse’s Poker Industry PRO, show PokerStars Michigan has averaged 410 concurrent cash game players over the last week.

That figure just exceeds that of PokerStars PA with an average of 405 concurrent cash game seats filled and is significantly greater than PokerStars NJ where the average is just 140 concurrent cash game seats filled. The WSOP/888 US Network with its six online poker rooms spread across three states averages just 275 cash games seats filled.

Later in the year, the lines between the states will continue to blur as interstate online poker is expected to expand. Michigan already has a law on the books that allows its gaming regulators to authorize online poker rooms in Michigan to combine their player pools with those in other regulated US states.

Furthermore, a decision in the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on the Wire Act handed down last month has cleared the way for state gaming regulators to authorize shared liquidity for their online poker operators without the worry of violating federal law.

BetMGM May Debut in Pennsylvania Soon

In addition to its launch in Michigan, BetMGM is also preparing to take the partypoker US Network to Pennsylvania. Roar and BetMGM were approved to offer online gaming (including online poker and casino games) and online sports betting by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) in October of last year.

And while the company has successfully launched an online casino and an online sportsbook in the state, it has yet to go live with online poker.

However, as the prospect of shared liquidity across US states where online poker is legal and regulated begins to become a reality, expect more online poker rooms to launch in Pennsylvania and in West Virginia where online poker is legal but no operator has launched presumably due to the relatively small population of the state.

Even international online poker operators that currently do not have a presences in the US are eyeing the US market as an opportunity. On Wednesday, NSUS Group, the parent company of GGPoker, the fastest growing online poker room in the world, is expected to be approved by the PGCB to offer online poker in the state.

Despite the expected approval, the debut of GGPoker PA is not expected soon, as the state gaming regulator has told pokerfuse that a test launch has not yet been scheduled.

Fans shocked as ex Premier League Referee is actually Irish

Fans shocked as ex Premier League Referee is actually Irish: football fans were totally shocked as regular sky pundit and ex ref Dermot Gallagher is Irish.
Dermot Gallagher was a Premier League referee who’s career spanned from 1992 to 2007. He refereed some of the Worlds greatest players across that time span of two decades. Gallagher later transitioned into Sky Sports, working as a pundit to give his opinions of referees and their decision making.
The former ref has a clearly strong English accent with many automatically believing him to be from England. However, after an interview on Off The Ball with Joe Molloy, today fans were shocked he was actually Irish. Even presenter Molly tweeted afterwards.
“Tough to take, but it seems the scoop of my career really will be Dermot Gallagher’s accent”.

— Joe Molloy (@MolloyJoe) February 11, 2021

To everyone’s shock, Gallagher had a Dublin accent and was totally unrecognisable from his Sky Sports self. Fans took to Twitter to voice their shock at the contrast of his accent change.
Change in accent
He then also revealed throughout the interview that he had to hide his accent and put on an English one. This after Sky told him he would be more appealing to audiences and people could understand him better.
“When I first started on Sky TV, they were very conscious of the words that I couldn’t pronounce. I had to watch the BBC News to try and practice.”
He later went onto say that his accent is changeable depending on the situation and who he’s talking to.
“It’s because I am talking to Irish people,”
“My best mate Alan Wiley gives me no end of stick because I have to crank it down for English people.”

Trevor Lawrence’s pro day: How to watch, what to expect from Clemson QB in NFL Draft workout

Trevor Lawrence remains a strong best bet for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The former Clemson quarterback will get a chance to confirm that status one more time on the field by performing well in his early and only pre-draft workout.
Lawrence should draw the attention of the first-picking Jaguars and several other teams with league scouts, executives talent evaluators taking close watch on Friday. Instead of waiting until Clemson’s official pro day on March 11 when the program’s other top prospects will work out, Lawrence will go through his passing drills a month ahead of time.

With no central NFL Scouting Combine this year because of more COVID-19 safety protocols, this will be the lone pre-draft look the NFL will get at Lawrence. After his workout, he soon will be having surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder to repair a injured labrum. from which he will need to time to recover ahead of when Jacksonville goes on the clock on April 29.Here’s how you can watch Lawrence in action and what to look for in his personal pro day:MORE: Watch Trevor Lawrence’s pro day live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)When is Trevor Lawrence’s pro day?Date: Friday, Feb. 12Time: 10 a.m. ETLawrence will be doing his throwing and running this Friday, Feb 12. He will be back in action where he practiced for many years with the Tigers, at Clemson’s Poe Indoor Facility. The workout is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET.How to watch Trevor Lawrence’s pro dayYou can watch Lawrence work out live in one of two ways. The ACC Network will broadcast the event starting at 10 a.m. ET Friday with a simulcast on ESPN2, dubbing it “All ACC: Trevor Lawrence Pro Day Special.” Rece Davis will host the hour-long show from ESPN’s home in Bristol, CT. ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay will be on site to report. Former college and NFL players Tim Hasselbeck, David Pollack and EJ Manuel also will contribute in the crossover production. The NFL Network also will have its own live coverage with “The Path to the Draft Pro Day Special: Trevor Lawrence” presented by Verizon, with analysis from its draft expert, Daniel Jeremiah, among others.MORE NFL DRAFT: SN’s latest 2021 mock draft | Big board of top 50 prospectsWhat to watch from Trevor Lawrence during his pro dayLawrence doesn’t need to pass to familiar receivers without facing a real defense to prove he has a big arm and can make all the necessary NFL throws with needed velocity and accuracy. He’s been showing that for three full successful seasons at Clemson against the highest levels of college competition, stamped by championship-caliber leadership. The biggest aspect of Lawrence’s workout is that he’s holding it at all. With BYU’s Zach Wilson emerging as a rival top prospect with his athletic skill set and intangibles, Lawrence is confirming his fiery competitiveness and work ethic by wanting to show what he has much earlier than usual in the pre-draft process. If you don’t follow college football and simply want to see Lawrence’s immense physical gifts and impressive frame at 6-6, 220 pounds for the first time, this would be the showcase for you. Jaguars fans should be pumped to see their future franchise leader in action as turns the corner to all-time college recruit to can’t-miss NFL prospect.Lawrence shouldn’t be affected throwing with his right shoulder and he won’t be taking any hits. He won’t be scrambling around wild out of the pocket, but his footwork, mobility and mechanics should be on full display. There’s no reason to think Lawrence will do anything to hurt his status, but rather remind everyone who thinks he shouldn’t go to Jacksonville ahead of Wilson and everyone else — such as former NFL QBs Brett Favre and Joe Theismann — that they’re 100 percent wrong. What is Trevor Lawrence’s injury? The news of Lawrence’s injury was a bit of a surprise when it came down last Friday, Feb. 6, which accelerated the need for him to conduct a solo Clemson pro day. The expectation is that Lawrence will be ready for regular football activities well before his first NFL training camp in July. A typical timetable to recover from a labrum repair is 6-to-8 weeks. By moving up his pro day a month, Lawrence is expediting that process with earlier surgery. That should put him on track to be near full strength by late April, just in time for the draft. The Jaguars should have zero concern that the injury will in any way derail the start of a promising NFL career for Lawrence.
IYER: How Urban Meyer, Jaguars can avoid ruining Trevor Lawrence after picking himTrevor Lawrence’s 2021 NFL Draft projectionLawrence keeps on getting attached to the Jaguars in Sporting News’ NFL mock drafts. That hasn’t changed since the Jaguars jumped the Jets for the No. 1 overall pick. The hiring of Urban Meyer as coach and main personnel evaluator caused little reason to doubt Lawrence is still the pick for Jacksonville. The Jaguars need a quarterback and Lawrence is a rare physical specimen and a generational talent for the position. The teams picking not long after them will check out the workout just in case, but most will accept the fact they are advance scouting for next season. Meanwhile, Meyer and his coaching staff can continue to think about how to help Lawrence thrive as a pro sooner rather than later.

Premier League preview – Gameweek #24

The best football league in the world returns to action this Saturday and Sunday as some truly huge clashes will thrill football fans around the globe. Two of the biggest games of the remaining EPL Season take place over the weekend as Leicester City host Liverpool and Manchester City welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium. Before we tell you the full fixture list for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, let’s look at those two games in more details and provide you with some betting odds for a couple of value bets.Leicester City vs. Liverpool (Saturday, 12.30pm GMT kick-off)A crunch clash in the battle to finish in the top four, or another walk in the park for the current champions? In recent seasons, The Reds have dominated many teams on the road and at home, but Leicester City more than anyone. Last season’s match at the King Power Stadium effectively ended the race for the title, with second-placed Leicester summarily dismissed 4-0 by the rampant Reds. A defeat would have pulled Leicester to within seven points, but instead a win from Liverpool made the gap an unassailable 13 points. This season, the clubs are even closer, with Leicester three points clear of Liverpool in 3rd place. A win for the away side would leapfrog them into 3rd place due to their already superior goal difference, but anything other than a win would likely see Liverpool drop out of the top four, with Chelsea and West Ham trailing by just a point in their wake. With Liverpool’s defence looking all over the place at the moment and manager Jurgen Klopp in a period of private mourning for his mother, who sadly passed away this week, Liverpool don’t look likely to keep a clean sheet against the creativity of players such as Harvey Barnes, James Maddison and Jamie Vardy. By the same token, Liverpool’s front line are firing again and even in their 4-1 home humbling by Manchester City, Mo Salah got on the scoresheet.Expect goals and be prepared to cash out when the time is right. Our tips: Over 3.5 goals (15/8) and Correct Score 2-2 (14/1)Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur (Saturday, 5.30pm GMT kick-off)This meeting between two teams in opposite form comes just two months before a Wembley meeting before the pair will decide which team lifts the first domestic trophy of the season.Jose Mourinho will be desperate for Spurs to get something from the game, not least because their top four hopes are hanging by a thread. Top in December, the Lilywhites could go into the game seven points behind Liverpool and Leicester, with this game and one more being in hand. That makes it even more vital that the North London side shut up shop and play on the break. That’s exactly what they did at White Hart Lane to win the first meeting between the two sides earlier in the season, when Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-Min scored the only goals of the game. This time around, Spurs go into the game struggling for form, on the back of an extra time defeat to Everton in midweek and having lost four of their last five fixtures. With the away side in poor form, it would be easy to assume that City will simply cruise home, but we think it might be a lot closer. Back the half-time draw, before City manage to clinch a late win.Our tips: Half-time draw/Full-time City win (3/1) & Manchester City to win from behind (8/1)English Premier League Gameweek 23 Fixtures:Saturday 13th FebruaryLeicester City vs. Liverpool (12.30pm GMT kick-off)Crystal Palace vs. Burnley (3pm GMT kick-off)Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur (5.30pm GMT kick-off)Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Aston Villa (8pm GMT kick-off)Sunday 14th FebruarySouthampton vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers (12 noon GMT kick-off)West Bromwich Albion vs. Manchester United (2pm GMT kick-off)Arsenal vs. Leeds United (4.30pm GMT kick-off)Everton vs. Fulham (7pm GMT kick-off)Monday 15th FebruaryWest Ham United vs. Sheffield United (6pm GMT kick-off)Chelsea vs. Newcastle United (8pm GMT kick-off)

Felony Charge Added to Accused Murderer of Poker Player Susie Zhao

February 11, 2021
Chad Holloway

There was an update this week in the case against 60-year-old Jeffery Morris, who is set to stand trial for the July 2020 murder of poker player Susie “Susie Q” Zhao.
Aileen Winblad of The Oakland Press reported that the case has been sent back to the district court by Judge Martha Anderson of the Oakland County Circuit Court so that prosecutors can add a new charge of felony murder.
There will now be a preliminary exam regarding the new charge before it can officially be added.
Morris, a convicted sex offender, was already charged with first-degree premeditated murder of the 33-year-old Zhao, whose body was found badly burned and damaged on July 13, 2020. According to an autopsy, Zhao was burned alive and had been sexually assaulted.
Police in White Lake, Michigan subsequently arrested Morris following the highly publicized murder. The new charge of felony murder – which means murdering someone while committing a felony – is essentially chief assistant prosecuting attorney David Williams hedging his bet as the more charges the better chance Morris will be convicted on at least one of them. Michigan does not have the death penalty, meaning Morris faces the possibility of imprisonment for life without the possibility of parole.
Zhao was known in poker for a few deep World Series of Poker Main Event runs and occasional appearances on the live-streamed cash game “Live at the Bike.” She had reportedly moved back in with family in Michigan after spending previous years as a regular cash player in the L.A. area.
According to The Hendon Mob, Zhao had amassed $222,671 in lifetime tournament earnings, including a career-best $73,805 for finishing 90th in the 2012 WSOP Main Event.
Susie Zhao
Details of the Case
In a press conference held last year, police said Zhao and Morris met the night before the murder at a motel at which Zhao had visited on multiple occasions. At the time, police said the investigation into any possible relationship between the two remains ongoing.
They also said Zhao’s poker or other gambling activities aren’t believed to be a factor in the case.
Morris claimed that after spending time with Zhao at Sherwood Motel, where they consumed alcohol, that she left around midnight “and took all of her belongings including her cell phone with her.” However, cell phone records indicated that it did not leave the property until around 5 a.m., which is when surveillance footage revealed Morris drove to the state park where Zhao’s remains were found.
Potential evidence was also discovered in Morris’ vehicle. Also discovered were duffle bags containing an apparently-bloodied bed sheet and a wooden baseball bat. Both items are being tested at a crime lab.
Morris is currently being held without bail at the Oakland County Jail with his next court date to be determined.

Kateri Proving a ‘Souper’ Purchase for Newtown Anner

In his early days in the Thoroughbred business, Hanzly Albina served the Foustok family’s Buckram Oak Farm as assistant farm manager and later managed Four Roses Thoroughbreds for the same operation.
“As a young person in the business, you don’t get to do a lot, but you get to study a lot,” Albina recollects.
The horseman is now applying that and other knowledge he’s acquired over the years as an advisor to Maurice and Samantha Regan’s Newtown Anner Stud, the breeders of ‘TDN Rising Star’ and GII Rachel Alexandra S. presented by Fasig-Tipton hopeful Souper Sensational (Curlin).

The broodmare band at Newtown Anner numbers around 65, split between their Versailles, Kentucky, farm on a little more than 1000 acres that once belonged to Standardbred operation Brittany Farm on Pisgah Pike. The couple also maintains a farm in Millbrook, New York, as well as a farm in Ireland.
On behalf of Newtown Anner, Albina and partner Nick Sallusto went to $167,000 for then 14-year-old Kateri (Indian Charlie), in foal to Paynter, at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. In signing for the mare, Albina was drawing upon the lessons he gleaned from one of Thoroughbred breeding’s legends.
“I am big fan of John Nerud and I try to learn about everything he did and how his thought process worked. This is a family that connects to him–Cozzene is down the page,” Albina explained, referring to the 1985 Eclipse Award-winning turf male that was campaigned by Nerud. “Now, I’m not one of these guys that is going to breed mares based on sixth and seventh generation, but the short answer is, there was a lot going on in the first dam [Sue’s Good News] and it was a beautiful first dam. There was a lot of beauty in the family and I thought I could work with that. She was a beautiful Indian Charlie mare. I loved the fact that it was Indian Charlie, because it goes back to Caro (Ire),” sire of the aforementioned Cozzene.
Albina was well-acquainted with the Caro-line, as Buckram Oak raced the sire’s son Siberian Express, a $320,000 purchase out of the 1984 Keeneland July Sale by Mahmoud Foustok. Siberian Express was, in turn, the sire of In Excess (Ire), who was bred and raced through part of his career by Mahmoud Foustok’s brother, Ahmed.
“It’s been proven time and time again that this European influence of Caro coming through, for whatever reasons, has been very good for American racing and keeps on coming up.”
Kateri foaled a colt by Paynter the day after her purchase and Albina was pleased with what he saw.
“I thought the Paynter was a pretty good horse,” he said. “I kind of gave her a pass being her first foal, she wasn’t a spectacular sort of specimen. Then we went to Tiznow and that was a magnificent horse. We took it to auction and no one wanted the horse. Nick and I decided we weren’t going to let this beautiful horse go, Tiznow was a little cold. So we tried to sell him again and the same thing happened, we didn’t get the money we wanted. Nick took the horse down to Florida and started prepping him. He went to the sale and that’s when Red Oak bought in and we raced it together.”
Bought back for $275,000 at Keeneland September in 2018, the Tiznow colt was led out unsold on a bid of $175,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Connections’ faith in the colt was rewarded when he fetched $420,000 at the OBS April Sale in early 2019.
“He was a stunning horse and the money we got from the 2-year-old sale kind of validated what we thought about the mare,” Albina said. “Since I held the Tiznow in high regard, I said, ‘Now it’s time to make a move with this mare’ and overbreed her a touch. We made a jump to Curlin, he was a stallion we really liked at the time. He was much cheaper than he is now and physically, we loved him.
He continued, “In [Kateri’s] second dam you have Easyfromthegitgo (Dehere), Deputy Minister-line, similar to Curlin on the bottom, and it had worked on the pedigree with Conquest Curlgirl [a daughter of Easyfromthegitgo’s GSW half-sister Sue’s Good News]. Typically I look for something a little closer, but it was close enough to where I was OK with it and the physical really worked.”
Kateri dropped her Curlin filly Mar. 28, 2018, and she was as straight-forward as could be, Albina remembers, as she grew up and as she was prepped for a date in the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.
“What stood out about her was how unremarkable the process was,” he said. “She was always a very good-looking horse, always well-balanced, there were never any issues. She got to the sale and looked beautiful, took it all in stride, never any hiccups. It’s not always that way. I don’t her ever being sick, I don’t remember any issue with her. She got to Saratoga and we had a very good sale. She was our highest-priced horse that year.”
The Kateri filly caught the eye of the team at Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation, who were extended to $725,000.
“This was the best horse we had for Newtown Anner that year,” he said. “We thought about keeping her, but we set a line on her and if we get more than our number, we’ll let her go and if not, we’ll race her. That’s kind of the exercise we do with all our horses.”
Albina, who consigns yearlings with Ron Blake as Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, also sold Peter Brant a Quality Road filly for $525,000 that year. Now named Boston Post Road, that full-sister to MSW & GSP Top Quality was a maiden winner at first asking at Gulfstream Park Feb. 7.
Albina said that the philosophy of Newtown Anner is to “breed the horses we typically don’t go out and buy.”
“Then we test the market and we trade,” he explained. “For [Souper Sensational], our reserve would have been very high and if someone paid it, they could have her and if not, then she comes back and we get to keep a nice horse. We aren’t going out there and buying million-dollar horses or consistently paying $500,000 and $600,000 for horses. If we can sell the ones that bring in excess of what they’re worth, that’s kind of the goal. The stuff we don’t like, we put little to no reserve on and move them on. We just try to make good decisions and I think offering all our yearlings at auction is a mechanism by which we can keep ourselves sharp and that we’re making good business decisions.”
After graduating and earning her ‘Rising Star’ at first asking, Souper Sensational added a facile success in the Glorious Song S. at Woodbine last October. The chestnut exits a good second when trying two turns and dirt for the first time in the Jan. 16 Silverbulletday S., and Albina believes she’ll continue to improve from here.
“I think she’s going to get better and better with distance,” he said. “We’ll let her show us. I’m not worried about any surface with her, I think her action tells me she can be very good on the dirt. I think she got a little unlucky in her last start, but she finished well. Some people are disappointed when they finish second, but I think the races she has to win are ahead of her. I’m very pleased with everything she’s done so far.”
While Souper Sensational has done her part to enhance her page, the family remains live elsewhere. Kateri’s Grade I-winning half-sister Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow) is not only the dam of the Japanese-based, UAE Group 3-placed Serein (Uncle Mo), but also of $2.5-million KEESEP graduate Tatweej (Tapit), a hugely impressive allowance winner at Aqueduct Feb. 4. Another half-sister, Tiz News (Tiznow), is the dam of 2020 Trapeze S. runner-up Tiz Splendid News (Maclean’s Music), who has returned to the worktab at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward. Tiz News changed hands for $190,000 in foal to Curlin’s champion son Good Magic at KEENOV last fall.
Albina reports that Kateri’s foal of 2019, a colt by Maclean’s Music, was ticketed for last year’s Saratoga Sale, but was sadly put down after suffering a freak injury. The agent said that Souper Sensational’s yearling full-sister “resembles her sister greatly and we’re very excited about her” and will be aimed at one of the major yearling sales later this year. Kateri is currently carrying to American Pharoah on a later cover and is booked back to Curlin for this year.

Saints and Chelsea complete Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final line up

The final two FA Cup Fifth Round ties took place on Thursday evening as four sides looked to join six other sides in the Quarter Finals of the competition.  Who would join those already through, let’s find out…
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 Southampton 2
Wolves had seen off fellow Premier League outfit Crystal Palace in Round Three, but then were pushed all the way by non-league Chorley in Round Four before squeezing through in that one, whilst The Saints saw off League One Shrewsbury Town fairly comfortably at St Marys before they then knocked holders Arsenal a few days later, also at St Marys, to reach this stage and set up their tie at Molineux. Both sides fancied going very deep in this competition and even perhaps have a shot at winning the whole thing, it had been a welcome distraction from their league struggles recently so who keep their cup run alive after this one was done?
Southampton had the better chances in a goalless first period, and after the break, they were to net twice to take their place in the Quarter-Finals, firstly when Danny Ings timed a run perfectly to get in on goal and although John Ruddy saved his initial effort, the ball bounced back off Ings and past Ruddy into the net, and then with time running out the visitors added a second when a mess up at the back saw the ball eventually was laid back to Stuart Armstrong who guided a lovely across goal and in off the far post to seal The Saints passage into the Last Eight.  Disappointment for Wolves who would have fancied a good run in this competition, whilst for Southampton it ended a run of four consecutive defeats and would have given the club a huge fillet after a tough week or two.
Barnsley 0 Chelsea 1
The Championship hosts have seen off League Two Tranmere Rovers in Round Three before they then saw off Championship leaders Norwich City in ties that had both been at Oakwell, and they would to be at home again in Round Five although it would be a much bigger step up against a Chelsea side who had won both their home ties against League Two Morecambe and Championship Luton Town with relative ease, so surely Barnsley would pose no problems for a Thomas Tuchel side who hadn’t lost since the new boss had come in and were fancied to perhaps win the competition? The Tykes though would take inspiration from the Barnsley side that dumped a star-studded Chelsea managed by Avram Grant out of the cup at Oakwell back in 2008 to reach the Semi-Finals that season, although Chelsea would not want a repeat of that!!!
A goalless first period saw The Tykes have the better chances and could and should have been ahead at half time, although the Blues probably should have had a penalty too with their not being any VAR, they had to go with the on-field decisions from the officials, old skool eh. Twenty minutes into the second period though Chelsea did manage to find the breakthrough, although it did look offside from some angles, as a lovely pass by Billy Gilmour released Reece James who took his time before sending a ball across goal for Tammy Abraham to tap home, was he ahead of the crosser, well on further inspection had VAR been in force they may well have allowed the goal to stand as it did seem on further evidence Abraham was just behind James when the pass was made.
The Tykes, therefore, had to try and find something although they had been much quieter in terms of an attacking threat in the second period, although they so nearly levelled with twelve minutes to go Abraham did brilliantly to head a goal-bound effort over his own bar, superb work at both ends of the field from the Chelsea man, and although Barnsley put their opponents under pressure at the end, they could not breach the Chelsea backline and it was Abraham’s second-half goal that proved enough to send them into the Last Eight. A good effort from the Championship side, but they now must turn their attentions to try and reach the playoffs before the season is out
That concludes the Fifth Round then, and the draw for the Quarterfinals was made between the two games this evening, so let’s see what that threw up…
Everton v Manchester City
AFC Bournemouth v Southampton
Leicester City v Manchester United
Chelsea v Sheffield United
Both Manchester clubs have difficult away ties, whilst there is a South Coast showdown at The Vitality Stadium between Championship Bournemouth and Premier League Southampton, and then The Blues reward for squeezing past Barnsley is a home tie with The Blades.
These ties are scheduled to take place over the weekend of 20/21 March so a bit of a gap until the next round takes place.

When Karl-Anthony Towns speaks about COVID, you – and the NBA – need to listen

The NBA needs to listen to Karl-Anthony Towns.Image: Getty ImagesWhen this pandemic first crept into our everyday lives roughly one year ago, many were quick to believe the misinformation being spread about how the virus was nothing more than a really bad case of the flu. By March, the first domino fell with Rudy Gobert making fun of COVID and touching the phones of the media members laid out before him during a post-game press conference. Only days later, he tested positive. The NBA reacted by postponing all games, which then led swiftly to the season as a whole shutting down. All other sports followed suit. The Rudy Gobert incident was the turning point for our nation, sparking widespread cancelations of public activities, which eventually taught us about terms like “social distancing,” “quarantine,” and “lock-down.” In two short months, we went from a nation of ignorant bliss, to one in chaotic turmoil. When April hit and our country — and the rest of humanity — were fully entangled with a new reality, lowlighted by surging unemployment and rising death tolls by the day, Karl-Anthony Towns and his family suffered a tragic loss. On April 13, 2020, Jacqueline Cruz, Towns’ mother, passed away after a week-long battle with COVID. In a call with reporters in December, Towns told the media that he had lost six other family members in addition to his mother due to COVID. “Last night I got a call that I lost my uncle,” Towns said. “I feel like I’ve been hardened a little bit by life and humbled. I’ve seen a lot of coffins in the last seven months, eight months, but I have a lot of people who have — in my family and my mom’s family — who have gotten COVID. I’m the one looking for answers still, trying to find how to keep them healthy. It’s just a lot of responsibility on me to keep my family well-informed and to make all the moves necessary to keep them alive.”On January 15, Towns took to Instagram to announce that he had tested positive for COVID. After indicating that he would immediately isolate and follow every protocol, Towns said “It breaks my heart that my family, and particularly my father and sister, continue to suffer from the anxiety that comes along with this diagnosis, as we know all too well what the end result could be.”“To my niece and nephew, Jolani and Max, I promise you I will not end up in a box next to grandma and I will beat this,” he said.G/O Media may get a commissionTowns missed 13-straight games while battling and recovering from COVID, returning to action for the first time last night. While he might not feel fully up to playing speed, he still gave a very solid performance —18 points and 10 rebounds.“I am a high-risk case,” Towns said, per ESPN. “COVID did not treat me well whatsoever. A lot of scary nights. One of the things that I told my sister when I got COVID was that, ‘Hey, I got it, and I don’t got a good version of it. I got a lot of COVID in me, but I am going to fight and beat it.’”“I felt very guilty about the treatment I got,” he added. “And I feel that should be more widely available to Americans, to anyone in the world. I felt very guilty even getting something that could help me more just recover, stay healthy, stay alive. There is such mental strain through all this time, a feeling of guilt because of the resources I have, and I wish I could spread these resources with as many people as possible. The guilt, just a lot of demons I haven’t dealt with that I put to the back burner for basketball.”Towns is only 25 years old. Throughout this year of continued battles with COVID, whether within his family or himself, Towns has more experience than most. When asked about the All-Star Game scheduled for next month in Atlanta, he didn’t mince his words. “I personally don’t believe there should be an All-Star Game, but what the hell do I know?” Towns said with a straight face. “Shit, I obviously haven’t dealt with COVID, probably a guy who has some insight into that. What should I know about COVID, right?”Towns is taking a more vocal stance from the experiences he has unfortunately weathered, and the NBA — and the Player’s Association — should listen to him. Give Towns a seat at the table. Let him speak on an issue that has personally affected him and his family gravely, in a way that clearly nobody currently at the table is willing to do to prioritize the health and safety of the players or their loved ones over the almighty dollar. Towns is exactly what is needed. .
